Days after Reliance Jio Infocomm claimed that Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea's tariff plans prevented customers below a particular price threshold from porting out, the decision was made.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) issued a two-page order on Tuesday that stated, "The Authority, hereby directs all access service providers to enable, with immediate effect, for all mobile subscribers, both prepaid and postpaid, requesting for a unique porting code, the facility to send SMS on short code 1900."
As per MNP regulations issued by TRAI, telecom operators should provide the port number to subscribers on a nondiscriminatory basis. After the recent tariff plan change for prepaid subscribers, the regulator also directed telcos to allow SMSes for porting.
